Example Design of Ancient Chinese History Teaching that Caters to the Diversity of Learning for Non-Chinese Speakers
Provision of Services for Designing Teaching Exemplars to Cater for NCS Students' Learner Diversity in Studying Ancient Chinese History
In his 2017 Policy Address, the Chief Executive proposed making Chinese history an independent compulsory subject in junior secondary schools, so that non-Chinese speaking students could also deepen their understanding of Chinese history and culture through studying Chinese history.
In the 2020/21 academic year, the Education Bureau commissioned the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong to provide support services to junior secondary schools that admit non-Chinese speaking students, which was well received by the participating schools.
The 2021/22 academic year project, "Example Design of Teaching Chinese Ancient History that Takes into account the diversity of learning for non-Chinese speaking students," was undertaken by Dongzhongwen Solutions Co., Ltd.
This project aims to provide teachers with teaching examples of ancient Chinese history for non-Chinese speaking students, enabling them to improve their ability to use diverse teaching and learning strategies. The team designed the teaching examples based on the "Adapted and Revised Curriculum Outline for Junior Secondary School (Forms 1-3) Chinese History (for Non-Chinese Speaking Students) (2019)". The teaching units are topic-based and designed according to the language-based teaching method for Chinese history. The content includes teaching guidelines and differentiated teaching materials (texts and activity sheets) to accommodate the diversity of non-Chinese speaking students. The teaching activities employ innovative teaching strategies, including language-based teaching, drama, e-learning (e.g., mLang), and extended reading, to enhance students' interest and effectiveness in learning Chinese history.
